Meet your local Black vendors!

Black History Month is a reminder to celebrate the achievements and contributions that Black Americans have made in our community. Although this month is dedicated to the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout the United States’ history, we want to emphasize the importance of educating others on Black history and being an ally to the Black community year-round. One significant way to directly help is to support Black businesses.

African Americans have suffered from a racial wealth gap in the Jim Crow-era where discrimination and segregation prevented Blacks from obtaining higher paying jobs. Even today, the median income for Black families is 12 times less than White families. Small business owners build wealth for their community, so supporting a Black-owned business would help reduce this wealth gap. This creates more opportunities for the Black community, such as building generational wealth or new property ownership.

Additionally, small businesses help strengthen local economies. Nearly 50% of small business purchases recirculate funds back into the local economy, compared to only 14% for chain stores. This means that supporting a Black-owned, small business directly helps their families, employees, and community.

This Black History month and all year-round, we encourage others to support and celebrate Black-owned businesses. The Indy Winter Farmers Market has hosted over a dozen Black vendors this season, and we encourage you to look into these businesses and show your support.
